How can I get rid of mice from my vegetable patch?
-
I have a field filled with little mouse holes and am about to start digging for a vegetable patch in this same field. Is there any tips and tricks to get rid of the mice? We have a nearby barn and I have caught 3 mice using 2 mouse traps in 24hours. I have another 12 mouse traps on order. So apart from the traps is there anything else I could use to get rid of them? or at least lower there population? I was thinking of mouse/rat poison down the small holes in the field. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Answer:
If you can, mow a wide area around the garden or till it wider than you intend to plant. Then get a sturdy cat. If you do get the cat, keep using traps but do not use poison. Mice frequently surface to die, and if the cat eats the poisoned mouse, the cat could also become seriously ill and/or die too.

"thinking of mouse/rat poison down the small holes....about to start digging a vegetable patch in the same field" duh! Just think what you are saying there. Your veggies will take up the poison - if it doesn't kill the veg, the veggies will then kill you. These are probably runs through the grass rather than part of the mouses home, giving them cover from predators, if you take away the cover they will be exposed to owls, cats, foxes and kestrels who will do a lot of your exterminating for you. So hire a rotavator do the field in a day and they'll have nowhere to hide. If you try poisoning them you will end up killing off a lot of your helpful predators, as well as other useful wildlife who may eat the poison as well, such as blackbirds and thrushes and hedgehogs who would help keep slugs, snails, and caterpillars away from your crops. Keep putting the traps out in the barn as they are probably living in there, 3 mice in 24 hrs is not that many by the way, fortunately mice are not as smart as rats and you should keep trapping them until you have them all.

Mouse traps/ Cats or poison they are the only options, tho if your going to use poison its not best to be using a cat/s. Many years ago in our shed were seed was stored we had about 50mice in three traps over a week, we were having to re set traps through out the working day. Best of luck Have noticed some poison don't attract mice/rodents at all

you will never be rid of all the mice,it would take a miracle,my advice would be to co-exist and suffer a few losses in your patch.

You live in the country- you get mice.if,like me, you also get deer, turkey, squirrels, ground hogs etc.unless they are doing severe damage leave them alone, they need a place to live-just like you Good luck with your garden
Pesticides for small mamals. Try flooding any holes with water and drown them. Or the fun way is purchase a airsoft rifle or a small pellet gun and theml them one at a time.

Glue traps with a dab of peanut butter in the middle of each one.
No stress
We had a problem with mice in our garden but it's not a problem any more because we have learned to live in harmony together ---I dont bother them and they dont bother.me. They are actually a lovely little mammal called Woodmice, they dont come into the house and they make their homes in gardens, fields, parks etc There is a strong possibility that your mice are not mice at all but field Voles --the only way to find out is to take a look at one. Through long experience, I have found that our first instinct to kill. spray, bomb etc etc is not right --they are just as much a part of the environment as we are. Not only that, but by killing off the tiny mammals which inhabit our fields then you are also killing the owls, stoats, weasels etc that rely on them for food. I would suggest that if you cut out your projected vegetable patch by removing the turf and double-digging the ground which is the normal procedure, then your mice/voles will migrate to other parts. You will obviously spending time in your veg garden so they will keep away in the normal course of event they dont like you around any more than you like them,. If you really do feel that you must get rid of the mice then please dont apply poisons or kill them ---all you need to do is get a plastic bucket which is quite deep, place a piece of wood against the side that the mice can climb and place an inch of bird seed in the bottom. they cant resist the seed and easily climb in but they cant get out so all you have to do is take your bucket of mice on a long holiday where they will be happy and out of your way.
