I overpruned my hydrangeas, will they grow or bloom this year?
-
Over the winter, I failed to research the proper method in pruning hydrangeas, so I overpruned them. I cut them back down almost to the dirt instead of leaving the stems. Did the overpruning ruin my hydrangeas? Will they bloom at all this year or even grow? Additional information: I live in NC and the hydrangea is in a pot.

Answer:
it will depend on which hydrangea you have... if a mophead and one of the new ones that bloom on old and new wood both, then it will be 'short' but still make stems and leaves and blooms... tho it might be a little later than most.....an older type of mophead or lacecap, will not bloom on new wood, but if you keep the potted plant happy, fed and watered and in morning sun, afternoon shade, it should recover.....and be gorgeous NEXT year!!... if it's a white paniculata, it will come on just fine, just keep it happy and in the sun..... here's good info on them.... http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/ http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/pruning.html oh, and white hydrangeas cannot be made blue..... http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/colorchange.html

They may struggle this year but you can stop it from dying by feeding and watering it regularly and try to ensure it has the correct amount of space for its roots and enough sunlight as it will be using energy and nutrients to try and regrow! It may not bloom this year but will bloom fantastically next year ish!

Hi Sam t, This is Ricks Picks. I work in the Garden Department for The Home Depot. Thank you for your question. Yes your hydrangea should recover. As long as you continue to take good care of your potted plant, i.e. water and fertilize it, the hydrangea should recover once the weather warms up. Remember that this plant likes the shade. If you have it inside then you need to provide a bright indirect light source for it. Do not expose the plant to direct sunlight unless it is the cooler morning sun. Your hydrangea likes a fertilizer that will be slightly acidic, so be sure to select one that will be for acid loving plants. Another option would be to use a plant growth stimulator such as Superthrive. I would wait until the weather warms up a bit before doing that though. Superthrive can be found at most garden supply centers. This is a concentrate so you only need 1-3 drops per gallon to have the desired effect. This can be used with your regular fertilizer too. Did you know that you can change the color of your hydrangea depending on which fertilizer you use? If your hydrangea is white and you want to turn it blue, you can use a Garden Sulfur product such as Espoma. Check with your local garden center for more information. If you would like your hydrangea to turn more of a pinkish/red color, all you need to do is use a fertilizer that is high in phosphate/phosphorous. This product can be found in a liquid and a granular form at your local garden supply center. Just thought you might like to know. This has been another of, Ricks Picks
