Is it illegal to panhandle?

How deep do most Chinese Elm tree roots grow in the Texas Panhandle?

  • I have A FOREST of Chinese Elm trees in my acreage. - I live in the middle of the Texas Panhandle (less than 3 miles south of the Canadian River) north of Amarillo. Earlier, I had "issues" with tree roots leeching in my lateral lines feeding from my septic system. - After digging up and re-laying 30 feet of clogged lateral lines, I think I "control" this by adding a bottle of Copper Sulfate once each month down my toilet. Knowing that the top-soil in my yard is already hard-pan caliche (I can barely scrape the topsoil in my grass to scratch a cloud of caliche-dust!) I wonder how deep the Chinese Elm, Maple and Mulberry tree roots grow to gain water to survive. My septic system and lateral lines are all buried 50 inches deep (in the hardness of the caliche) so if all my tree root-systems grow OUTWARD from their trunk to gain moisture, then I wonder how they can grow downward to my lateral lines. %I'm already preparing to up-root a few wild trees from my yard in the Springtime when / IF we get any rainfall to soften the topsoil in my region. P.S. PRAY FOR RAIN! - and aim for the Texas panhandle. (We are still enduring through the 50-year-long drought.) Thanks.

  • Answer:

Elm trees have very aggressive root systems and will grow into your septic system. More info: http://inspectapedia.com/septic/fieldplants3.htm http://www.ehow.com/list_7614021_plants-damage-septic-system.html Said a prayer for rain in Texas. My sister lives there and she needs rain too.
