How to establish grass?

Is it a smart to let Spring planted fescue grass "tough it out" as much as possible during the summer?

  • as the cost of watering the grass every day during the hot dry summer would actually be much more expensive than buying a new bag of fescue to spread out again in the autumn and water it for a few weeks then,,when have more rainfall? also, will this allow the TOUGHER grass to survive and all the weak grass will die? also, when fescue is looking like it is dying..is it really? or is it just going dormant? and how likely will come back again after a good rainfall? WHY DO SO MANY WATER THEIR GRASS EVERY MORNING IN THE SUMMER? IS THIS A WASTE OF MONEY AND REALLY NOT PROMOTIONG STRONG GRASS TO GROW? please explain what you can...as the idea is to establish stronger grass.?

  • Answer:

How much water do you think is at the surface of the dirt in your lawn? Not much, right, so where will the new grass get it? Down deep.....hmmm needs long roots to do that, right, soooo, water the new grass in the morning so it can stock up for the rest of the day. Come fall it will have somewhat of a root system and even produce more and longer roots due to the rain. Now, the following Spring those roots will be down deeper and will require less water so only water every other day. That grass will stand a better chance to make it though the hot summer. However, it will always need a little help when it gets stressed due to the heat so don't stop watering, just cut back. Simple as that.
