How to cut an orchid stem?

Should i cut my new phalaenopsis orchid?

  • my boyfriend bought me a phalaenopsis orchid for valentines day, it was already in bloom. it has two stems (spikes?) with six flowers on each. one stem still has one bud that is ready to pop and the other all have bloomed and one is starting to wilt! my question is should i wait to cut it for a possible rebloom? when is the appropriate time to cut the stem back and how do i go about it? this is my very first orchid, i have always loved them and am so happy to finally have one! i want to keep it alive and thriving! also, i have it in a south facing window with partial light and water it once a week. any help is much appreciated!

  • Answer:

The flower spike should be cut back after the bloom. This is usually indicated by the plant as the spike turns brown. From what i have read cut only the brown part. take a look at this site for more info. If everyone helped 1 person a day the world would be a better place.
