When do I fertilize hydrangeas?

Why won't my hydrangeas bloom?

  • i have a couple of hydrangea (a mophead) that i bought some 6 years ago and it never bloomed, not even once. when i bought it it has a bluish purple flower and after it wither and dried out it never bloomed anymore flowers. i live in a tropical asian country so we don't have the four seasons where the plant would leaf out during the winter. it always sunny or sometomes rainy where i live and usually around 84-86 degrees F on average all througout the year. by the way, the hydrangeas are all potted and are all healthy, the plant has actually fat stems and big green leaves. they have been also been reproduced from cuts so there's plenty of them now, all green leaves and no flowers. what should i do for them to bloom? should i take them out of the pot and plant them on the ground instead? i also use some plant fertilizers or flower boosters but nothing happened. i already tried looking for answers on the web but all i can find are for hydrangeas that grow on cold countries with four seasons.

  • Answer:

I would go ahead and plant some of them in the ground where they will get partial shade. I cant guarantee that will help them bloom but it cant hurt to try. Water them regularly. Look around through your neighborhood and see if others have them planted. You could talk to a local nursery also and see if they have any ideas.

Are you pruning it and when? Many hydrangeas only bloom on stems that are 1 year old, so if you are pruning it back every year it will never bloom. Try not pruning it for a year (or 2), and if it blooms, then prune only directly after blooming.

Check out the species of hydranea you have planted. Some hydrangea grow flowers on new wood and some flowers on old wood. The most common hydrangea purchased is the Bigleaf Hydrangea. This particular species of hydrangea are called Hydrangea macrophilia and they get blue or pink flowers on them. However, they produce a lot of cultivars and these cultivars can die back to the base of the ground in the winter. Since these hydrangea bloom on old wood, this creates a problem. If the old wood dies back to the ground, your hydrangea won’t bloom when it grows back the following year. This is because it’s growing new wood and the new wood doesn’t produce flowers on this particular variety. Another problem when your hydrangea won’t flower is that you may have pruned it the year before too far back. A lot of times if these particular hydrangea are pruned in early summer or late winter, you will have on your hydrangea no flowers to speak of. This is because, if they are over pruned in summer, they tend to die back farther than they normally would and you will end up having to wait a year for hydrangea blossoms once more because the hydrangea won’t flower. If you are having problems because your hydrangea won’t bloom, it is best to avoid pruning your hydrangeas anytime but early spring when you can see where the dead wood is and will not accidentally over prune.
