How many times do you water flowers?

Water spraying seemed to wipe out spider mites on indoor plants - it this for real?

  • Or am I getting suckered, and they will be right back again? I am overwintering several plants for cuttings for outdoor flowers. The impatiens had a spider mite infestation (the coleus, juncus grass, and hot peppers look fine - maybe they aren't viable host plants). I didn't have any special sprays, so I blasted the heck out of the less infested plants with the water spray in my kitchen sink, like 3 times. It's a week later, and no sign of spider mites. I threw away the 2 heavily infested plants. Can it be this easy, or will more be hatching next week and I really need to buy some insecticidal soap? I'm in Minneosota, so it will be more than 2 months yet before I can put plants in the flower garden. I don't want to order insect predators being that I can just chuck these plants and grow more from seed for a lot less money. tx!

    It really is that easy! I'm in MN as well, and have many indoor over-wintering plants. You may have to spray the heck out of them a couple more times, and do spray the other plants once or twice just for good measure, and you are right on top of any mites issues. Good luck!

I would probably go ahead and give it a soap treatment a week after the initial one just to be sure any hatched eggs are handled. FYI, it can be dish soap- you don't need to buy fancy kinds for this treatment. But yes, spider mites really do not handle water well, which is why they infest house plants and drought-afflicted plants so readily.

As long as you got rid of any potting soils that may harbour nymphs,larvae,and eggs, you may have rid them, otherwise, 'they'll be back'. You really need an acaricide, that will be safe for your plants, and even indoor use. You might consider something like this: http://www.liquidladybug.com/
