Does temperature affect plant growth?

  • Hi, I was wondering if temperature affects plant growth. For example If I have an indoor plant and my house was at a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit, would my plant grow, die or neither? Also when watering my plants, does the temperature of the water matter? Thanks! Much appreciated.

  • Answer:

Plants need cool water like the temperature of rain. Winter plants can live at 50 degrees. A cactus could not live or the succulents.

Absolutely, air and soil temperature will affect plant growth. It depends on the species of plant whether they will be affected by fifty degree temperatures. Most plants will not die at 50º f. but many tropical plants will not grow, and even many temperate climate plants will not bloom or form fruit at that temperature. Water that is too cold, or certainly too hot, can damage any plant.

Cold water will give it a shock. Water at room temp might be better. If the plant is dormant now, it may revive as the days get longer.

I think overall temp is better but I don't think water maters
