How deep do you plant pine tree seeds?

Can we plant our christmas tree in our yard? Its a pine tree.?

  • Hey, can we plant our pine tree in our yard? i convinced my parents into doing it because we have a big yard, and the tree is so big, it would be a shame to throw away such a big tree... so do you think we can plant it? it got around 8-10 inches from the lowest branch to the bottom. do you think its feasable? If so, how should we plant it? i've planted our pear tree before, should i treat it like any other tree, or do we have to do something special because it doesn't have roots. thanks for your answers!

  • Answer:

Many deciduous trees will root from branch or trunk cuttings but conifers (pine) will not.

You cut off the roots, it's gonna die no matter what you do to it. That's like cutting out the heart from a person. The plant is already dying/dead, it just takes a while to decompose.

A cut tree will not form roots and grow. Absolutely not, don't even bother trying. Christmas trees can be purchased with their root balls wrapped in a burlap sack. Those can be planted. But they are also very expensive. You can reuse your tree by chipping it for mulch, which is what most cities and towns do when they pick up the trees. Or you can stand it outside and hang treats on it for the birds. Birds will also use it for shelter. Sadly, cut trees are a shameful waste.

If it doesn't have roots you can not plant it. The root is what makes it grow. I have tried it in the past all it does is slump over. Sorry.

This is going to be hard work. Are you up for that? Dig a deep hole (be sure to slope or shore the sides per OSHA rules and regulations). Plant most of the tree in the ground with only the tip showing. Add fertilizer and loam as you refill the hole. Water thoroughly. Periodically spray paint a greenish color. If needles fall off, reattach with duct tape or a non-biodegradable glue.

I think it would work, I mean i guess it wouldn't hurt to try would it?

It may not work, but the way to "root" something is to plant it really far in the ground, also burying the bottom row of branches. Keep it watered like there's no tomorrow.

What not plant it and see what happens. I would take a branch from the tree to start a new tree as it would probably root better for you. Roots do develop once a plant is in the ground on most plants. Why not a tree? If you have a good green thumb, it might work. If you plant the actual tree, you will need a fresh cut a the bottom so it can take in water once in the ground. You would also need to stake it pretty good until it got strong roots. Some pine trees grow faster than others, so growth would depend on type of pine you have.

as you have read, you can not plant a tree and expect it to grow if it does not have roots. But you can set it outside for the winter and prop it up where you will see it from a window. Put bird feeders in it. It will stay green until spring (unless it really got dried out inside) and will look nice for a while and give some shelter for the birds.

Just like most have mentioned above, you aren't going to have any results planting your Christmas tree in your yard and having it thrive. Nice that you don't want to waste it though. Don't be discourages, there ARE plants out there (and even a tree or two) that you can grow after being cut- after they are put into water, they will root themselves. Curly Willow is a good example. It's is a tree that grows in warmer climates.
