I have a trellised back yard made 5-6 feet high with rail road ties and I want to level out the top section by adding a few more rail road ties and make a flat wood patio about 8 ft byt 8ft around a tree that I will evenutally use as a tree house platform.

Answer:
I'm assuming that you mean terraced. First thing to do is check the local zoning requirements. Secondly, keep in mind that you will have to place sand underneath the timbers because they have to be level and the sand bed will minimize any contraction or expansion of the timbers due to the freeing and thawing of the soil. If you live in an area that has a large home improvement center, you probably can get a plan from them at no charge.
