Howto build a wooden patio on a back yard trellised with about 6ft of rail road ties?

  I'm assuming that you mean terraced. First thing to do is check the local zoning requirements. Secondly, keep in mind that you will have to place sand underneath the timbers because they have to be level and the sand bed will minimize any contraction or expansion of the timbers due to the freeing and thawing of the soil.
