How many times do you water flowers?

What are the easiest flowers to keep alive in a window box throughout the year?

  • I'd like some suggestions for flowers that don't need lots of TLC and that can be kept outside in all weather conditions. I'm a beginner when it comes to gardening but I managed to bring a small pot of cyclamen back from the dead. I live in London, so that ranges from below zero and snow in winter to around 25 degrees Celsius in summer (and rain all year round). The window sills face west so do get good light. Realistically, I'd probably remember to water them 2-3 times a week. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Answer:

Thymme is good to grow in a window box as it doesn't get too big and will survive and grow all year round. There are many varieties including silver leaved and golden thyme which can be used in cooking. With it you could grow pansies and violas - if they get straggly cut them back and they will regrow as bushy plants that will go all year round. You could also think about mini container roses and dwarf lavender.

Most of the year I have pansies or violas in my window boxes. There is a winter flowering variety (although I think this years cold snap has stopped them from flowering) and in the spring I put in summer flowering pansies which are fine, but sometimes get a bit frazzled if there is a long hot spell.
