How long does grass grow in Arkansas?

I want to grow grass but my ground is little sandy, can my grass still grow?

  • i have bought grass seed and found under a pile of stones were i want grass to grow there are sand about 2 inches thick, i have turned the growned over and its a mix of sand and dirt, how would my grass grow if it does? thank you

The main problems with sand is 1. it doesn't hold water and 2. it doesn't hold nutrients. By adding compost to the soil before you seed you increase the water and nutrient hold capacity. Dig a few holes in golf course greens and you'll see how much sand is in the soil matrix.......of course they use "designer" sand....specific grit size. Any concern would be if the "dirt" and sand are distinct layers. Such cake layer soils are difficult to manage since water does not cross such diverse layers easily. If there is an interface, make sure they are mixed well.

Give it a try. Grass likes good drainage and sand is often included as a base for grass planting.
