When do I fertilize hydrangeas?

What are the ideal growing conditions for Hydrangeas?

  • I would love to add some Hydrangeas to my flower garden. I have many conditions available from Sun -partial shade to shade, different soil conditions and drainage available. What conditions do Hydrangeas prefer? I live in Southern Michigan, with harsh winters and warm moist summers. Love to get as much info as possible before I plant , Thanks:) Peace

Ah ,My favorite plant. They love good organic soil - lots of compost. I lived in Atlanta with hot dry summers and had a heck of a time keeping them watered - don't know if you'll have the same problem. Morning sun 4 hours is best. Hot afternoon sun Willl "cook" them. Must have at least 2 hours for blooms. They will grow in shade but never bloom. Southern exposure will be you best bet in Michigan as the northern winter winds will kill the blooms that are formed in fall. Protect them from late spring frost. Lime for pink blooms - place some concrete scraps of any kind in the soil when you plant them. The limestone will leach in the soil over time and give pink blooms. Blue - plant with anything rusty - old rusty nails, SOS pads , rusty nuts and bolts. Late spring freezes wil be your biggest challenge. so plan for that mostly

Hydrangeas are very adaptable, alkaline soils produce pink flowers and acid soikls blue ones. They like a fairly rich soil with good drainage and morning sun but will do well in full sun if they get a lot of water. Keep well fed and mulched. Cut back 'spent' and weak branches in winter, but leave strong ones that haven't flowered .

your 'harsh winters' will be the problem..... are you prepared to protect them and have funny-lookin' piles of leaves and burlap in the yard?.... the newer Endless Summer types don't have to have 'old wood' from last year to bloom on... the new growth is going to bloom, too... so consider them before the regular types.... good website here... http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/ great gal runs that site.... in fact, email her and ask about your area and what might be the best for you.... I kinda think the paniculatas and arborescens would do better in the cold.. but they're the white ones..... anyway, run thru the FAQ's and read each type's info... you'll choose a good one, I'm sure.... there's planting hints there and color change hints, too!....
