Which do I use to get rid of these maggots but not hurt my compost?!?
-
Okay, it's spring, I have show rabbits and their are lots of tiny flies EVERYWHERE! Now the way that I have our rabbits set up is in an open air rabbitry using hanging cages. This allows the poop fall to the ground, decompose a bit, then the poo and dropped hay is added to the compost bin. It has worked very well and keeps my bin full. But, when I cleaned out the rabbitry I saw LOADS of super tiny maggots under the layer of poo/hay. This has to be the source of the fly population. So...........how do I get rid of the maggots without hurting my compost? I already devastated my population of nasty-looking giant beetle larvae the LAST time I mishandled my compost and don't want another set back. I am thinking of: lime, diatenaeceous earth, or beneficial nematodes. I know that lime cuts down on bad smells and that the DE is abrasive on a micrscopic level and could potentially kill the soft bodied mini-maggots but won't that ALSO hurt my good worms and maggots? Help?!

Answer:
I compost rabbit and chicken droppings in closed black garbage cans sitting in full sun before incorporating it into my other compost.

They are good for the Compost. Just leave the things in there that will be. Not like you're going to eat it. It is Just for the plants. Go outside turned over almost any large rock and there they will be. I think you should put Lime in your in your compost and I don't mean the citrus fruit.

read here at the bottom of the page... http://www.cyber-north.com/gardening/compost.html keeping the pile HOT will be your best move, that and turning it often.... with the bunnies eating alfalfa containing pellets ,, your compost should be SMOKIN"!!!!.....

How about introducing an animal or creature that eats (loves to eat) the maggots? Not sure what, but better than chemicals.

Since your rabbits are in hanging baskets they must be in a barn for safe keeping? I would incorporate some birds in the same area they love maggots!! Good Luck!!

Try introducing a insect that eat's maggots. I have no idea what does, but you should ask that as your next question.
Tiny tweezers. Pull them out one by one.
