How to get rid of Fruit Flies?

• How do i get rid of fruit flies? they seem to have increased in number, we have 2 pet parrots and we give them fruits and vegetables... what is a good way to get rid of all of the fruit flies? and how should we give our parrots fruits and veges without *making* fruit flies?

• Answer:

  Get a canning jar with the 2 part lid or any jar with a rubber band. Fill jar with things that attract fruit flies - rotting fruit, a little vinegar, etc. Stretch saran wrap over the top of the jar, screw on the ring but not the flat part of the lid, punch little holes in the saran wrap with a toothpick. If you don't have a canning jar you can use any jar, saran wrap and a rubber band or something else to keep it tightly down. Swirl now and then to get the scent into the air through the holes to attract the flies. The fruit flies should be attracted to the sour fruity odor, get inside and not be able to get out. Dump outside when it gets nasty and doesn't attract flies anymore and refill. If you have fruit out all the time this won't get rid of all of them but should reduce their numbers.
