We cut down some fruit trees from our garden- how do we get rid of the trunks?

dig out or leave to rot, making sure periodically there are no new shoots appearing, if it does then nip it off.

I'd recommend hiring a professional to dig up the trunk roots and all.

You will have to dig them up, which can be a hassle. Look in the yellow pages under "stump grinders."

how long are the stumps?If there a couple of feet to play with,dig round the base,cut the roots and wobble the stump out , takes a while but is the best way. If they are short,drill a big vertical hole and fill it with pathclear or similar,lrt it rot away

I hired a pro with an auger, and they made short work of the stump I had.

If It's not too large, and you fancy some fitness work, One must dig, twice to three times the depth, normally upto 2 - 2.5 ft deep, however the width of the hole is most imperiative, You will come across 2 maybe three main root branches, when you get 2 - 3 ft down, unless they are getting very loose and small, you may have to saw them off, using a small sharp hand saw (£5- £8 from B & Q) Alturatecly i its a large stump, you can get an estimate from a tree surgean who has a stump grinder. Or just get some " Root Out" from B & Q, make sure you drill 5 holes in the top of the trunk, pour the root out in the holes, and this will kill off the whole root, in a matter of weeks, ( few months top ) Make sure you tie up and cover the top of the stump, if yiu have any regard to wildlife that may park up on the stump. It maybe there death, when they peck or lick at the lovely root out !!!! I hope this helps. Andrew

Do you still have the axe or the chainsaw? Try not to burn the trunks but put the wood to good use.

You need to drill a long hole in the trunk and pour trunk killer down and then cover up the hole so that if it rains it doesn't wash out and so that the birds don't drink it. You can get the poison from the garden centre or places like B&Q, possibly some larger supermarkets. Alternatively you could dig the whole thing up but that may be difficult if the roots are too deep.
