How could I redecorate a living room with a blue carpet? Colour scheme ideas?
-
I live in a rented house and I want to redecorate it a bit for myself and my fiance (we're getting married in a few months). Currently, the living room has a blue carpet, hideous long red velvet curtains and two miss-matching sofas which I've covered in throws. The walls and ceiling are white and there's an ugly white marble fake fireplace with grey streaks and a black mantlepiece. I'm stuck with the blue carpet, the ugly fireplace and the white walls. We're hoping to buy some new furniture but I just don't know what colour scheme I can go with because of the carpet. I hate the blue carpet and don't want to match everything to it but because the room is an irregular shape, I'm not sure an area rug will work - I'll still see the blue! If anyone could suggest anything I'd really appreciate - photographs of living room colour schemes would be great. We live in a great house with great rent and a great landlord - but it was owned previously by an 80 year old woman and the living room still reflects her tastes!! Thanks for your help everyone!

You'll be best to stick to colours such as charcoal, white, and black. Maybe with pops of red. You could buy some white sofas (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S19873851/) and accesorise it with some charcoal scatter cushions, then some oak furniture to brighten the room up a little, if you are short on cash go for oak effect - (this oak effect coffee table is only £16 and is very quality as I have one my self, http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80111339/. There are also matching side tables in the same line for only £7.50.) As you can't paint the walls why not buy some canvases or photo frames with photos of you and your partner in (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70167464/ this one would look good over your mantelpiece and is only £4). You could also get some plants and some candles (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90213224/). Other things that may look good - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70151043/ http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60143218/ http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/90110061/ http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60098975/ http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70155017/

Our son and his wife bought a house recently and kept the blue carpet to save a little money for the time being. He painted the walls in barley white and added some fabulous stencils, avoided any blue in them and went for shades of gold and silver. They bought two settees in a light mustard shade to tone in with the gold and added all shades of colourful cushions. Other pieces of furniture, small chest of drawers, nest of tables all in a rich pine shade. Curtains, lampshades etc., to match settees. I think it looks great. The room now has a warm, colourful and comfortable feel.

Have you looked under the carpet? There can be some really nice floors hidden under carpets which you could stain. Just put the carpet in the loft and when you move just put it back down again for the landlord. http://www.tjrobertsdecorating.co.uk

ask your landlord to help or even pay for a neutral carpet of wood flooring, if thats a no then totally ignore the carpet and decorate it how you like. Once youve done it to suit the carpet will blend in
