Can you paint bathroom tile?

  • I have been told my multiple people you can. I want to paint the tile in my shower/bathtub as I can't afford to replace it at this time, but need the color changed. I talked to Home Depot today and the lady told me yes you can and showed me what to "prime" it with then to paint it with a satin indoor paint. Then a guy walked up and said no it won't work. It will chip. So that put doubt in my mind. But about 5 people have told me they "heard" it worked. I don't have any first hand reports of it working. Has it worked or not worked for anyone?

    You can buy special bathroom tile paints that can look good. But I tend to just buy them new.

You can, but NOT the way you were told. Go to a REAL paint store and ask one of their customer service people. They will tell you the RIGHT way. Be prepared. If you don't prep properly it will never last

Yes you can and the HD person is correct. What she left out was you need to break the glaze somewhat so the primer adheres. Based on the how hard tile glaze is will depend on what you use, I'd first try a sanding sponge, coarse. If that doesn't work find a sheet of emery cloth, that will work. It is not that large an area so it won't be that much work. Be sure to do the spaces between tiles. Allow the primer to dry completely. I like Zinzer 1-2-3 or Fresh Start from Ben Moore. As far as paint, I use Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo, you'll probably only need a quart. Allow to dry THOROUGHLY before using shower, 24 hrs. and let a fan blow on it.
