How can i open up the hypercam window again?

Replacing a bathroom window with another window?

  • So I have a 2ft X 2ft window where the center is right about shoulder level(im 5'6") in my bathroom with the tub/shower against the wall. It's a anderson window that cranks out however at the moment the mechanism that opens it is broken so the window doesn't open. The wood around the window is pretty nasty and I currently have a black trash bag covering the window(attached to the screen which is on the inside, not sure if that's normal either) so my neighbors cant look in while I shower. Here's my question: Im having my house sided this spring(vinyl) and I also wanted to do some work on the bathroom concurrently, including replacing the bathtub. I would like to get rid of the current window. I wouldn't mind another window, a horizontal one maybe that's higher, my ceiling is almost 8 ft high so i could put a 1ft window about 6in from the ceiling and not have to worry about peepers or molding. How difficult is this? Who would I contract to do the work, is it something a sider would do as well or is it a completely different department? How expensive(ballpark)? Should i just worry about getting rid of the first window now? i definitely want that window gone! thanks for any help, i'm a first time homebuyerr, just purchased last year and i need all the advice i can get

  • Answer:

Just replacing a window is cheaper than moving one. If you move it, you will need some one to re-frame, re drywall & plaster finish. You probably won't be able to go 6 inches from the ceiling due to framing but you can move it higher. You would need a general contractor (not the sider) or a bathroom specialist that can do framing, drywall & plaster work. Consider an obscure glass (one that lets in light but you can't see through) or sandblasted type glass. It is considered a plus to have a window in a bathroom & without one you would need to install a ceiling fan to remove moisture/humidity and possibly even more light if the window contributes significantly.

You would need to do the window as you redo the bath walls, the outside can be temporarily patched until the siding is done. Most exterior siding crews aren't the best for interior bath finish work, you will want some one who specializes in baths for this, they can do the window and shower walls simultaneously.
