Which color should I paint my F100?

Help with picking a color with which I must paint, please?

  • Hey. I'm painting my front entrance. When you walk into the house this is the first room you see. It is closed off, and is quite small. I need a color that is very inviting, and warm. No neutral colors like brown and beige please, I already have too many of these in my house! What are your suggestions for color, and how I should paint it? (Sponge paint...etc) All opinions open! Thank you!

  • Answer:

Since you already have enough brown and beige in your home, this shouldn't be too hard because these colors are pretty neutral to all the other colors. In the first room you see go for something that says wow. Your probably browned out at the moment. Try a cyan blue, or any light to medium blue except baby blue. Paint one of the walls a red color, and use your brown or beige paint for the trim only. This will keep a feeling of continuity throughout the home. How about a green, not dark though. Something refreshing, and paint one of the walls white. Or you might just want to opt for a black and white scheme. All walls white/ceiling and black trim! Add dashes of red and orange accessories in pillows etc. Maybe throw in some light blue accessories. I once had alot of brown in my home, and realized that the color was making me feel brown and enclosed. Brown is nice, but too much can make you too comfortable, that you might not want to leave the house. I got fed up and just painted those darn hallways white, another room light teal, and the other light green. Go get lots of color samples from lowe's, home depot, or walmart etc. Lay them all out on a table, and then just start taking away what doesn't strike you. This will leave you with a few to choose from. I forgot! It's up to you in how you want to paint it. If you just want to get it done then roll it on. Good luck, and I know how you feel!! Happy New Year! M.S.

Yellow (light) is a nice inviting color, it's warm and cheerful and supposedly it is suppose to promote conversation.

How about a light shade of green (sage), or what about a denim treatment. They have some great treatments - denim, or glaze. Sometimes if you paint a darker color in the back, and put a light color on top it will make the room look larger (sponge painting). How about placing a mirror in the room as well, mirrors often open rooms up.

How about like a sage green, not too dark. Leave the ceiling white and put some crown molding. Paint any window or door moldings white.

Here's an idea to really brighten the room: 1. Using painter's tape, paint black and white (not "stark" white, a more creamy white for a little color) stripes on the bottom half of the wall, vertically. I suggest making the stripes about five to eight inches wide, so it looks classy and not busy. 2. Paint the top half the same shade of white. 3. Use a chair rail or a border to separate the two. 4. Paint your trim, chair rail and molding black. After painting, you can choose any color you wish to add a little accent, (like pillows, etc.) to pull together rooms from the rest of the house. Black and white goes well with almost anything, and it gives it a much more expensive and classy look. Good luck!

I think it's nice when you can relate the entry to your home to what's happening on the outside. You could choose colors from nature like a gentle green or subtle blue and use botanical prints and a mirror to decorate. Or you could choose colors that relate to your exterior paint colors. For example, if you have red shutters, you could bring some red into the entryway. I would avoid very garish, shocking reds, but there are some beautiful cranberry and red wine colors that are inviting, warm, and sophistcated. If you decide on a deep color like red, make sure that you have good lighting in the room. In addition to your overhead light, it would be a good idea to have a hall table with a lamp or a couple of wall sconces to add light. To tie your entryway to the rest of the home, use the same color trim you have used in the rest of the house.
