What is the difference between wall paint and ceiling paint?

• I noticed they're the same price. I could understand how wall paint might be formulated to be more resistant to stains and fingerprints but if this is the case and ceiling paint is the same price, then what is the advantage? I tried painting some area of a ceiling which I had to repair. I got it color matched and they gave me wall paint but when it dried it got distinctly darker. So I decided to repaint the entire ceiling and I'm deciding which way to go. I certainly want a lighter mix than the one they matched for me but I'm afraid pure white might show too many defects. So, my question is 2 part. One, why ceiling paint is different at all, and two, what should be the minimum tint in a ceiling to ensure some level of concealing defects (I want no yellow of any kind in it if I can avoid it since the colors of the walls and trim are cool colors)

  ceiling paint is formulated to drip less, ceiling paint is always flat except in rare situations. flat wall paint can be used on a ceiling with no problems aside from mabey being a tad more messy if your rolling too fast the fact that it's flat conceals the defects not the tint
