What's the contract job?

Creating a painting contract? How?

  • I'm having our 2200sq house painted and was quoted for $4300, now since they dont have any forms (small work out of home kinda) we both agreed I can draft a contract to avoid any misunderstandings regarding whats expected of the job. How can I draft a contract? Can it be just on a regular word format and have both parties sign? Do I need witness or anything special? Just want to keep it is as hassle free as possible. Thanks P.s. The house that will be painted is on Ajax, Ontario

  • Answer:

Doing business with a painter that doesn't have a printed contract can run you into all kinds of problems potentially. You want to be able to have the right to cancel (due to bad work) at any time. I would supply the paint--so that you know the exact product you are getting and the grade of the paint (most paint stores offer the same color in many grades and some contractors will get the cheapest, poorest grade without your knowledge). I got my whole house painted for $20 an hour for the "boss" and $15 an hour for the workers. I retained more control this way and only paid out money as the work was actually completed. Alot of painters are out of work because of the slowdown in the economy which has in turn put remodeling and maintenance projects on hold for the majority. Hence, you are in the driver's seat and should be able to set the rules of the contract. There is too much competition for most painters right, except for the few that are the very best and have been in business for years and years, for them not to be dropping their prices for labor. Good luck!
