Can i paint wood paneling to look good?

Answer:
Yes, it can be painted. And yes, it looks good painted. First, lightly sand the paneling. Then prime it. (I recommend Kilz primer.) Then paint it, making sure you get into all the cracks and crevices. If you use a really fluffy roller, it will help you to get into the crevices. The end result looks a lot like wainscoting. It has a charming "Old World" feel. If you want a smoother, dry wall look, there is a special wall paper made just for the purpose of covering paneling. You apply this wall paper and then paint right over it. The end result are walls with no crevices. I'm sure you can buy this wall paper at any store that sells wall paper.

We did it and it looks great. Here is the update on painting wood paneling: On HGTV they mentioned that a lot of people have bought or have houses with wood paneling and want to know if painting it is an acceptable option. They said yes and they do it on TV all the time. The real answer is--will you like how it looks. Some people fill in the grooves and some people place special wallpaper liner over it and paint. It's up to you what look you want.

no, painting over wood paneling is kind of like trying to paint over wall paper. you will end up with a funny texture and it will just look terrible. i would just remove the wood paneling, sand down, prime, and then paint the wall what ever color you were planning on painting the paneling.

If you are going to be there for awhile and aren't necessarily going for the painted wood paneling look, then I would splurge and put up sheetrock. However, there is a product similar to wallpaper that you can put over the paneling that will smoothe out the surface, but you may as well just use that money for sheetrock and do it right.

We've rented two houses with wood paneling that was painted over! You just have to make sure its cleaned off really well, then you can use KILZ paint it works great. You don't have to fill in the small strip crack things, but you can if you want. They also make stuff to fill those in. Check ou homedepot or lowes. If you use a white or off white paint, I think they'd look good. Our house that we rented had white painted paneling, and it looked fine!

Log onto HGTV and search for how to. Yes you can and you don't even have to fill in the gaps if you want a wainscoting effect. But use a paint with a bit of gloss or eggshell. Flat paint over paneling looks dull and focuses on the gaps and any imperfections in the wood or fake wood.

Yes you can paint the pane ling.If its stained the have to rub it down with a medium sand paper, fill any holes then under coat it you might have to give it a second coat before you put the top coat on colour of your choice.

Depending on your choice of colors, it can look very good. There are paints which will give it a very attractive wood paneling look. A local paint vendor can give you good advice, including surface preparation.

I think if you fill in the spaces, sand it lightly and prime, you should be able to paint over the panelling to look good.

Our friends bought a mid-century house that has wood paneling on the lower floor. We ended up painting the paneling and it looks nice. I definitely recommend that you prime it first.
