How do I fix a scratch?

How can I fix a deep scratch in a crib?

  • within minutes of owning our new crib daddy to be managed to put a nice scratch in the new crib for coming baby.. So now what to do? The crib has a dark cherry finish to it. The scratch is 1cm or slightly wider and a couple inches in length and then there are a few thin scratches. We haven't assembled the crib yet because I am unsure of how we are going to do this. Fix it ourselves or send it to the upholstery place a few blocks away. I figured it would be cheaper doing it ourselves.. or have my aunt do it who used to fix furniture.

    WalMart, and many hardware stores sell a stick that contains coloring to match certain stains. You just rub it over the scratch-works very well. Since cherry is pretty common, it shouldn't be a problem to find.

Must be your first baby. Congratulations! If it was your second you would know that the baby will do far more damage to it and it doesn't really matter! Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a sanding sponge, NOT sandpaper and stain to match your crib. Use the sponge to sand down the area. Don't be afraid, it is just wood. Sand it until the scratched area is level with everything else and then stain it. Sanding sponges come in different grits. Get 120. Do not try to sand only the scratch. Sand a large enough area that everything will blend well later. Use an old terry cloth washcloth to apply the stain (wear rubber gloves) just dip it in the stain and wipe it on then wipe off the excess. If it has a shiny finish get a spray can of polyurethane clear coat and, after giving the stain a day to dry, spray it on. You will ALWAYS see the affected area no matter what. Nobody else will though. They will be busy looking at your beautiful baby!
