How to install basement fire blocking?

How can I remove an old, unused fuel barrel in my basement?

  • The old fuel barrel is between two load bearing walls and the large sewer pipe is blocking the way out between those walls. Is there a safe way to possibly cut the barrel into manageable size pieces and then take them out? I believe it is mostly empty, but would be afraid to cut it with my angle grinder for fear of sparking a fire. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

I'm a southern boy (metro Houston) so I may blow this badly but, correct me if I'm wrong, the fuel you are dealing with is a low grade of oil - lower than kerosene - and in the neighborhood of what we call coal oil. If true the flash (ignition) point is a relatively high temperature. Assuming that to be true then it would probably take an open flame, as opposed to a spark, to ignite it. On the other hand if it's akin to butane, propane or something along that line a single spark might have you learning to play the harp. Because of the inherent risk involved with using a grinder I would not even consider doing that. With risk in mind you could probably rent a metal cutting saw and do the required dissembly in fairly short order. Considering the location I would probably cut it only enough to be able to remove the tank. You can finish the job of cutting the tank into multiple pieces outside in the open. Another possibility is to hire a plumber to cut enough of the sewer pipe out to enable removal of the intact barrel. While he is on site, after you've removed the barrel, he can reattach the sewer pipe. Last, if there is any way you could pump any remaining oil out of the barrel that would be a plus and if you could flush at least some of the residual oil that would be even better. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

If temporarily disconnecting the sewer line would allow you to be able to get that barrel out from where you have it, Do that. I would not attempt to cut the tank. You could spark a fire.
