What to get for new appliances?

• We are buying a home without a kitchen (water problem - kitched was gutted to studs and sub-floor) so need all new appliances (and everything else). Stainless steel looks nice now, but I wonder if it start to look dated in a few years. Same with granite counters. They are getting quite common - isn't it time for the new fad tom come in? Anyone have an opinion on what that might be? I used to love corian, but when looking at houses, kitchens with corian looked so dated. More so than laminate (I thought). I dont want my new kitchen to look too dated too quickly! And having to buy all new appliances - any recommendation on getting a decent deal on this? I hadn't realized how many decisions are involved in making a kitchen

  You used the word "fad", those type of choices will become dated but certain things will be around for a long time. There are still plenty of nice looking kitchens with white appliances. There are still plenty of kitchens with Corian counter tops that still look great. If you really look at kitchens, what makes them look dated is usually the cabinets and floors. They don't become dated so much as just worn and a bit beat up. The new stainless look that doesn't show fingerprints will be around for a long time. Granite counters will be around for a long time. Look at banks, they have been using granite and marble for over a hundred years. It is a look of quality and timelessness. True wood floors, classic ceramic tile and similar features will always be uptodate.
