How do you hand wash clothes properly?

Is it OK to hand wash the majority of my clothes?

  • I put my undies and socks through the wash but I prefer to hand wash the majority of my everyday and work clothes. My apartment washing machines are not very good and I'm worried that my clothes, especially my work clothes are going to get ruined. I've had problems before. It's time consuming to hand wash the clothes but they aren't even really dirty, just need need to be freshened up. Are there any health concerns to hand washing clothes as opposed to being washed and dryed in the machines?

  • Answer:

Health concerns? Wha? No, not that I know of. Unless you are constantly sticking your hands in bleach or something.

I lived in the Dominican Republic for two years and the women I knew wouldn't wash their clothes in a machine because they thought it didn't clean them well enough. If you have the energy, more power to you.

Well it depends on what type of work you do, because if clothes are contaminated with chemicals like exterminating pesticides, I would use a machine verses hand wash, to make sure all residues are removed. Some chemicals have to go thru temperature to kill bacteria and viruses.

When I was younger I use to wash my clothes by hand. Never had any problems, gave me some form of exercise. The only problem, is if you are allergic to some soaps it may cause your hands to dry or peel, so if you have sensitive skin I recommend either using gloves or do the lazy thing, use a machine. But the exercise washing slothes by hands is really great.

Nope, you are fine hand washing, and your clothes will probably last longer.

The only health concern that I could see would be heavier materials that might not dry quick enough. It could also be drying to your skin so where those yellow kitchen gloves. They even make special detergents for hand washing. I used to wash my work clothes by hand when I couldn't make to the laundry mat.

No, but there's more of a health hazard when you wash them in the community washing machines. You never know what goes in there...vomit, pee, dog poo...God only knows! You're better off handwashing everything!

Beth

That's fine.
