Jansport backpack?

Will washing a Jansport Backpack in the washing machine damage the backpack?

• My friend has a Jansport backpack and it always looks clean. i asked him how he cleans it and he says he uses the washing machine, i wasn't really sure if he was joking or not so i looked it up. So far i found a few people say it looks clean, while others say it doesn't work. My backpack is white, and doesn't have the leather bottom. So just wondering.. does it work? or does will it damage the backpack? and will it be okay to dry it in dryer or hang it outside?

  There should be a "Care Instructions" tag inside the seam of the backpack.... Every time I tried this as a kid, the zipper wound up being ruined...But, it might have been the brand of backpack....
