Can I use a fabric steamer to clean clothes?

I was wondering if I can use a compact fabric steamer to clean clothes quickly, since I've read steam kills bacteria and supposedly can also remove stains and odors, and I've seen those new washing machines that use steam to clean more effectively. Is it possible to use one of those compact fabric steamer to clean up a shirt per example? I'm thinking of it as an alternative to clean up something I really need cleaned fast -- rather than the long washing machine + dryer cycles.

depends how dirty your clothes are,steam cleaners are not very good for removing grime but will freshen clothes brilliantly and as you say kill germs. but you will need to check the labels to be sure your clothes can tolerate the heat.
