Why Are BABY WIPES BAD for your LEATHER SOFA? What should I use to condition my leather sofa?

  • So many people use baby wipes on their leather sofas, but many of you have said that its "bad" for your sofa. Why? what are the reasons behind it. ALSO, how can you condition your leather sofa other than going and buying a conditioner? any natural products someone can recommend??

  • Answer:

Have to agree with others , I am on my second set of leather furniture and have allways cleaned with wipes with no problem. I agree with the person who says that dust is the biggest problem for leather furniture. - but lets be honest how long does it really take to whip a duster over a few sofas? As for conditioning well i use a spray that bought in the supermarket - i tend to use it at the start and end of the winter as feel that central heating is not good for the leather - then give it a once over mid summer as my furniture is not in direct sunlight. My sofas are off whiter and still look show room new despite being three years old and having various teenagers sleeping on them, cats laying about ob them and adults laying all over them so ther you have it - my take on leather furniture

Some baby wipes may contain alcohol which will have a drying effect on the leather. I would recommend visiting an auto store and using what they sell for the leather interior of fine automobiles. What you want is the leather cleanser/cleaner and conditioner separates. Follow the directions of first cleaning the leather, and then conditioning it. For maintenance dustings you can use a damp cloth, the excess conditioner that remains on the couch will protect it from the minor amount of moisture.

I live in the UK and buy leather wipes from the supermarket to use on my sofa. I checked underneath first so I could do a test patch to make sure there would be no damage and then a few days later I did the whole sofa.

I always use baby wipes on mine, and it's done no damage! I didn't know you weren't meant too. I thought, if they're kind enough for baby's bums they'd be ok! I've had Johnsons Leather wipes from Asda but thought they were rubbish!

you should never use baby wipes because they dry the leather and make it crack i wash mine over once a month with fairy washing powder just add a bit of powder to warm water and wash over this cleans it and makes it more supple

The biggest enemy of leather furniture is DUST. It dries out the leather and then it discolours and eventually begins to crack.
