What is the proper way to shampoo a carpet with a rental machine for best results?

  First, vacuum really well. Then pre-scrub with some water, a bit of dish soap (just a squeeze) and some household ammonia the areas of stains and heavy dirt. Then, fill the machine tank with hot (not too) water and add the rug shampoo. Start in one corner of the room and go very slowly with the water injection followed by the vacuum (its all together). Go back over the area with the vacuum and no more liquid. When you have finished the room, do it a second time with just clear water in the machine. This will help remove any shampoo residue and the carpets will stay cleaner longer. Also do not walk on them until completely dry!!! Lay towels or throw rugs on the areas you have to walk on.
