What causes my glasses to get a milky white coating in my dishwasher?
-
When I use my dishwasher on normal cycles, my dishes come out squeaky clean. However, after a period of several months, I notice that my glasses get a milky white look to them. They are no longer crystal clear. They are clean, but not something I like to show off to my guests. This almost looks like they are completely scratched up inside. It does not look like it is residue from the Cascade dishwasher detergent. Can anyone tell me what is happening to these glasses?

Try this site http://home.howstuffworks.com/dishwasher.htm/printable I use to use a dishwasher cleaner after every few cycles running it empty. I tried washing my crystal in the dishwasher. Dumb mistake, it washed the gold trim off but I did find out that my mouth was also on the gold rim. Honestly, I don't like dishwashers. More work than using hot soapy water in the sink. Also you hand dry them and they are sparkly clean. When we bought our new house, dishwasher was not a requirement. You have to remove and clean out the drain. The racks should be cleaned well and especially the silverware cups. They are just so nasty. It's just the two of us and we help each other so it doesn't take long and I don't have to put things back in the dishwasher that has cooked on food from the dry cycle. Dirty water build up? mineral build up? soap scum build up? It doesn't matter. Yechhhh! If it's been used a while, it just puts nasty stuff on your dishes.

It's calcium buildup from hard water. Get some jet dry, it should help.

Jet dry and similar products work well to counteract hard water buildup on your dishes. The cheapest and best thing to use however is white vinegar. It cuts through the film and makes all of your dishes sparkling clean. Try adding about 1/4 cup to your next load of dishes and you will be amazed at how well it works on all of your dishes, not just the glasses.

I have the same problem. Try adding some Glass Magic to your dishwasher the next time you run it. You may also want to use a dishwasher cleaner to reduce the mineral buidlup in the machine.

Might be mineral buildup from the hard water. You may need to put a bit more cascade than normal to counter that. Good luck!

Hard water makes your dishes get that cloudy film. Do you have a water softener? You should be using a drying agent to like a jet dry.

It could be etching but I've had this problem too. I just pour a good dallop of white vinegar on my dishwasher door prior to closing and wash normally. Then they sparkle like new. I would give that a try, before I figured they were etched and needed replacing. Mine had gotten so bad I was emabarrassed to serve drinks in them. But the vinegar has taken care of it. Silvlerware looks new too. I use on every load now.

Mine do the same thing. It's from getting worn down from the dishwasher. I tried using different tablets and liquids but it doesn't matter. I have had to stop putting them in the dishwasher as they are looking scary, too scary to give a drink in one to a visitor. Either wash them by hand or wash them top shelf on a quick cycle. That is the only thing I can suggest. :)

* It's the Caustic soda (ie Sodium Hydroxide - Strong Alkali) in your dishwashing powder etching silicone from the glassware, giving rise to a dull scratchy appearance. * Change to a non Caustic dishwashing powder (one that contains Sodium Meta Silicate as the primary source of mild alkalinity). Good Luck!!
I had the same problem because of our water in town so I had to switch to those tabs with dawn dishwashing soap. Jetdry didnt work at all. Dont use vinegar if you have real silver or it will ruin them.
