What purpose does the appendix serve in the human body?

  • I had mine removed over the Christmas holiday, so it's really no big deal to live without your appendix, but why were we born with them if so many people have them removed later due to appendicitis? What is the main function of the appendix?

    The appendix is a dead end; it doesn't lead to anything. It plays a very small part in the immune system, but it isn't a nessecary organ. Most doctors agree that it is a vestigial part of the body, which means that it has lost most or all of it's use through evolution. Even though it has no use, it can get infected and cause a lot of problems, including appendicitis. If appendicitis is ignored, the appendix can burst and leak a bunch of bad cells throughout your body and make you ill; that's called peritonitis.

It's something that is not used in our modern bodies. It's left over from a time when we used to eat tougher grasses and plants, and more uncooked foods. It stored a bacteria necessary for digesting them.

the appendix is small evidence to evolution. the appendix would be used to process a certain chemical in grass and plants. rabbits and deer have use for appendixes. as humans and as omnivores, we use our appendix very rarely, if at all.
