What causes knees to pop?

What causes a person's ankles and knees to "pop" as they walk?

  • Mine have "popped" (making a popping or clicking sound) as I walk, esp. my ankles as long a I can remember - even in childhood. I am really used to it but apparently it doesn't happen to everyone. I just wonder what exactly is popping?

  • Answer:

there can be one of two reasons... if there is slight pain or lots of pain...or any variation this sound is your joints popping back into place... or the other reason for this sound is CO2 in your joints being released... and btw this will not cause any kind of arthritis
