Does anyone know what happens to a persons medical records after they die and how long they are kept for?

I do a lot of geneology work and it would assist me with my own family if I knew of certain conditions they had with my immediate relatives.

Great question. By Federal law all medical records must be retained for 20 years. These medical records must be preserved in immaculant condition.

I'd like to know this in the UK. I have heard they go into storage, and then get destroyed, but I don't know for how long. Also, in the UK, with our obsession with the Data Protection Act, would next of kin be allowed access?
