Why does Medi-Cal calculate Share of Cost by deducting the $600 FMP instead of the $1047 income cut off?
-
It's insane.I'm on SS Disability. My SSDI monthly income is about $140 higher than Medi-Cal's highest income cut off of $1047 p/month to be 100% eligible for Medi-Cal at no cost. So Medi-Cal expects me to pay a monthly share of cost for medical services. This is an amount I have to spend on any given month before they start to pay any of my health costs, which I would have no problem with. That's if the calculation was fair to me a single individual. Get this, if I had a dependent I would get an additionaly FMP family maintenance premium of 600 added to the 1046. But since I don't my share of cost you'd think would be lets say 1187 (my m/income) minus 1046 cut off which would be $141 p/m Share of Cost but NO!!! They calculate 1187 minus 600, what they say is my monthly cost of living. On any given month, I have to spend $587 on medical expenses before they kick in a dime. Is this sane? Tell me if some legislator is trying to fix this!!

Answer:
If you're on SS Disability why aren't you also on Medicare? If you are dual eligible you are already receiving a tremendous amount of public aid. With the time it takes to get approved for SS DI, the two year waiting period for Medicare turns out to be minimal. Including basically free prescription drugs.
