How safe is it to get your tubes tied?

Is it safe to get my tubes tied?

  • hey i'm thinking about getting "my tubes tied" and i was wondering what the side effects are and what is the safest age to get it done? I'm only 16 now but i was wondering if i could get it done when i'm 19??? I've tried to find info. online but can't find the answers i need, if you could list some sites also that'd be great.

  • Answer:

As a person who also doesn't want children (at any age), I have looked into having my tubes tied. There may be long-term side effects, as well as a the fact that it is an invasive surgery, and that always carries risks. I have decided that it's not a great enough benefit to me to have my tubes tied. I use birth control, and have prepared myself for the fact that if I conceive, there will be an abortion. There is a tonne of information at www.tubal.org As a side note - Women who have their tubes tied can still have children through in-vitro fertilization.

They wont do it at a young age, my cousin had 3 kids by 26 and they still didnt want to do it, she had to convince them. I would say talk to your Dr about the Depo Provera shot, in most women it suspends periods, has few side affects and you only get the shot every 3 months. Im 34 have 2 kids and still dont want to do anything permenant even though I think Im done. Ive been on the Depo for 3 years and I love it. My 4 year old was the product of contraceptive film failure, ask about the depo injection.

Why in the world would you want to get that done at such a young age? I don't think you have enough life experience to make such a decision. You may not want children now, but wait until you're an adult to make such an important medical and life altering decision. If you don't want children, there's birth control, condoms, etc. Many ways of preventing pregnancy. Wait a few years until you're more educated, on the medical portion, and in life. Good luck to you :)

No. Not fully developed yet.

I've heard that yes, it is safe. While I think you should wait before making such a big decision for the near future, it is said to prevent some cancers and other illnesses that attack the reproductive organs. That is one reason why many dogs are spayed or neutered, because it prevents the deseases such as uterine cancer or prostate cancer.

Most doctors wont tie a woman's tubes unless she is over 21 and has had at least one kid. Even then many doctors are hesitent. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking at it as a form of birth control. Get an IUD, the patch, a shot, a pill, a condom, or something else. You're young and will probably want kids eventually. You may think you don't now but yes most women do get feelings as they mature that it's time for them to have a child.

getting your tubes tied at 19 is going to be a very difficult process. most doctors wont even think about doing it because it is such a huge decision to be making at such a young age. you have so many child bearing years ahead of you - what if you meet a great man and change your mind and want the surgery reversed? the reversal process works for some women, but not all....so if you decide later on that you want kids the process of getting the surgery reversed may not work for you and you may never be able to have children. for this reason, doctors will not even think about it at your age. however, if you are diagnosed with some sort of reproductive disease and the doctor says it is necessary for you to get your tubes tied (from a medical standpoint), then ok - the surgery will happen. but it is VERY VERY VERY rare. this is not a question of when is the safest age to get it done but will you even have it done at all at your current age, and my guess is absolutely not. you will have to wait until you're older and have some life experience under your belt before a doctor will even talk to you about this on a serious level.

It's reasonably safe, but good luck finding a practitioner who will do it. Usually they won't until you're a certain age (25) or have had one child. Yet a guy can get a vasectomy once he turns 18! Boy, isn't that fair.
