How to remove infected ingrown toenail?

Im pretty sure my ingrown toenail is infected do I need to see a doctor? 10 points!!!?

  • Well I have an ingrown toenail on my right big toe because the walking boot I had to wear for my ankle injury was tight on my toes. I have had this ingrown toenail 3 times in the last few months because of the walking boot but I got it out myself. I no longer have to wear the walking boot however I can only walk on tiptoes on that foot due to severe ankle pain so its putting more pressure on my toe. It wasn't that painful but Im pretty sure that its infected now because its it swollen, red, it weeps and there's pus coming out of it and the pain is increasing, also the redness has spread about quarter of the way up my toe and into the middle a bit. Do I need to see a doctor to have it removed and/or get antibiotics? Or should I just treat it as I have been by soaking it in warm water etc? Thank you in advance.

  • Answer:

I'm not a doctor or anything but I had a very similar experience but it was with my hand, I hit my step-brother in the mouth, then it split my hand down to where you could see to the bone. I told the doc's that it was from slamming my hand in a car door, so that might be why they didn't give me any antibiotics... Stitches were put in, but a couple days later there was redness and swelling and it kept getting worse, and started to discharge yellow pus, and the redness continued to move up my arm, the stitches even came out from my skin becoming so deteriorated . It was from the saliva from his mouth that had caused a "Staff Infection". Eventually when the redness keeps moving up, it will make it to your heart, when that happens, you die. It got a little past my elbow when My dad's best friend was very concerned and took me and got me antibiotics, my dad was 300 miles away and I was 17, and no vehicle, but this man, who has passed away saved my life. Now I know this is in your toe, but I am pretty sure you might have a staff infection with how you said the redness is progressing and moving up more. And if you are in your shoes for a long time there are probably lots of germs similar to what may be in saliva, or that can cause a staff infection. With the pus and everything. I highly suggest you go to the doctor and get the antibiotics for a staff infection, cause it is such a simple thing, yet if not taken care of you can die. I hope everything turns out and you feel better, let me know how everything turns out cause I'd like to know if I helped someone's life, thanks. P.S If you get anymore hang nails, try to get it out with tweezers and nail clippers, it might hurt, but you can do it , the pain of getting it out will outweigh what you will have to go through if you just let it go.
