What causes extreme chest pain?
-
I occassionally get extreme stabbing pains deep in the upper left hand side of my chest. I've had them since I was about 13. I have a very healthy heart(have had numerous tests) and am fit. I sometimes get low blood pressure and also have fibromyalgia. I know that heart attack like chest pains are a symptom of fibromyalgia, but I've been getting them when my fibromyalgia is not bothering me and is 'dormant' so to speak with no other symptoms or apparent inflammation. It's an extremely sharp pain, like being stabbed or bones breaking and usually lasts for about thirty seconds, coming and going in waves. It hurts like hell and never ceases to scare me when it happens. After the initial pain wears off it still hurts a little. Can low blood pressure cause it? Or what else could it be?

Answer:
I get this to, also along with my fibro and when it is doormat. Anxiety, which usually goes in hand with fibro, can also cause this. I have very low blood pressure as well, and they do not attach it as a cause of the chest pain (left side as well). You may also want to check your gallbladder out, my pains still come, but were far worse before I had my gallbladder out. It wasn't pain like heartburn either, it was stabbing and sharp, just as you describe.

I too have fibromyalgia and even when we think it is dormant so to speak it isn't always. I get the same pain, and my doctor says its muscle spasms from inflammation in my ribs from the FM. Try putting heating pad on tour chest or soaking in hot tub of water. I feel for you, cause I know how bad this can get.

I suggest you to consult a doctor. General public won't be able to answer your question. Self doctoring is not advisable.

I am glad your heart tests are good, but have you had a tilt table test done? Which tests the response of your blood pressure while on the tilt table. Also did the tests include a Holter monitor, which monitors the cardiac activity over a 24 hour period. When does the pain occur, after you have been sitting or lying down, or standing for any length of time? and does your doctor know this. Has your doctor made any suggestions as to how to increase your blood pressure, e.g increase fluid intake, avoid coffee and alcohol. Ask your doctor if the pain your experiencing is associated with the low blood pressure. You may not be aware low blood pressure has been identified as one of many symptoms of Fibromyalgia, (but not all Fibromyalgia sufferers have low blood pressure) and with low blood pressure it may cause an irregular heart beat to be felt. I understand a little how you feel, as I have CFS and Fibromyalgia, and for me it causes low blood pressure from time to time and irregular heart beat, which can cause pain but I also have a heart murmur. I hope your doctor can help sort things out, and that you can feel a little better soon.

Ya know... do ya get anxiety attacks? I had a couple of years when I first came out that I would get CRAZY panic attacks and that went right along with it... Also... I get a similar issue from certain reptitive motions or holding certain positions for to long... almost like an intense muscle cramp in my chest... Just my thoughts... (((Tash)))
