Should I get a different job? Best Answer+Rate!?
-
I work at a clothing company in our local mall. They give me lotsss of hours around Christmas of course but then after the holidays are over I only get about one 3-4 hour shift a week and sometimes I don't have even one shift a week. (I have worked 8 hours in a week but that's quite rare). I have a lot of on-call shifts and usually don't get called in for them. I need to start saving money for college because this is my 2nd last year of high school. So, Should I get a 2nd part time job? (I get a lot of on-calls though so that would affect my availability) Should I quit and get a different job with more hours? Please leave any other suggestions you might have. Thank you :)

Hey hon, I too work at a retail store and I know it can be frustrating to be dealing with crappy hours. My job doesn't give me too many hours itself. Yes, I do work a lot around Christmas but then it's pretty much crappy the rest of the year. It's just the way retail stores work depending on the business (of course, having a crappy economy doesn't help very much with this problem). I kinda do blame the economy as the reason why our hours is crappy in general. Sometimes it's the company itself that could be making cut backs on payroll as of why your hours may be suffering. I totally understand that you're trying to work to earn some money for college and that's a good thing. I solved my crappy hours issue just simply by getting myself a second job. It's a little stressful at first dealing with two different demands but then it gets easy as time goes by when you start figuring out what works and what doesn't work as far as your schedule goes. If you really insist on getting some real hours, I would try to work at fast food restaurants. I have worked at fast food restaurants for a few years and I would have to say I get more hours working there than working at a retail store (at fast food restaurants you usually work 5-8 hours per day). It's just fact that retail stores are struggling in this economy and that's why the hours are very crappy right now. It's truly your judgement call on this one as far as if either getting a 2nd job or just quitting that job all together and get a different job would be benefical for you. I would probably suggest to you to first try getting a second job and see how that works out. If that plan fails, then put in your two weeks notice and kiss that job good-bye (just up your hours at that second job after you finished working at that retail store). That's what soo nice about having a second job is, if one job fails you, then you have another one that can back you up. With that said, I hope this helps.

Well if its for college, I suggest you do if your family has trouble supporting you. As for whether to get a second job or quit the first and get a job w/ more hours, it all depends on the pay and whether or not you are able to perform the job.
