  The liver cells make ALT, which is a liver enzyme. If the liver cells become damaged, then these enzymes can leak out and become higher in the blood tests results. They test healthy people to come up with a range that they consider people to be considered normal....in this case, the Alt would be listed as anywhere from 7 up to and including 56 units per liter, and would be considered well. What one considers normal another may consider High or Low. It doesn't vary too much... but in some cases this range can.
