Why Would I have Only One Swollen Tonsil?

One swollen tonsil and ear pain at least 6 weeks?

  • My right tonsil has been swollen for nearly 6 weeks. It's not really painful but causes pressure into my ear which at times gets quite uncomfortable. I also have a kind of orangy "film" on areas at the very back of my throat, mostly on the left. I saw my regular doc a few weeks ago. He gave me amoxicillin, said there could be some underlying infection. I did the whole course of antibiotics with no change. Saw another doc, she said it must be viral and I just can't fight it off. She gave me prednisone, steroids to boost my immune system. I also asked her about the spots on the back of my throat and she said it was of no concern. So I finished off the prednisone with no relief. Was feeling worse so went back and saw my reg doc again. He still thinks it's some kind of infection so has now given me cefuroxime. I'm on day 4 and besides now having a brutal sinus cold (which I got while on the prednisone), the tonsil and ear are the same. I've also noticed a spot behind the swollen tonsil that I can see only when things line up correctly that looks blueish white. Not a growth so much as a patch. I've also been super tired lately. The doc did some blood work this time: a mono test, thyroid, iron, etc. He said if these pills don't work we'll start taking some pictures. I'm so tired of feeling crappy all the time. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks, Tess

"The doc did some blood work this time: a mono test, thyroid, iron, etc" About the thyroid: You need testing for thyroid ANTIBODIES as well as TSH. TSH ‘norm’ should be .3 – 3 (w/ most feeling best at < 2) but, for diagnosis, would not matter if ANTIBODIES are present. Indicative of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroiditis (cycles between hyper & hypo at start)…main cause of HypOthyroid & is worse (...OR Graves Disease - HypERthyroid). WARNING: Doctors seem not to want to find/treat thyroid disease. You may have to go to more than one doctor before you get the right tests, interpretation, and treatment. Best wishes.
