What could cause a debilitating sudden pain in upper leg?

Severe Leg Pain and minor swelling. What could cause it?

  • For the past 3 years I have had severe leg pain. It was gotten worse over the 3 years. Last november I started having swelling. Sometimes my ankles will be the size of my knees. I am currently on up to 180mg of morphine daily so that I can function and work. I am also on Lyrica and cymbalta for nueropathy. I have seen a neurologist, a vascular specialist, and had tethered cord realease surgery done. I had Spina bifida when I was born and had tethered cord syndrom. I have run out of ideas of where to go next. I am tired of being on the meds. I gained 65 lbs in less than 3 months, which can't help with the pain. I also had a rheumatoid factor that came back extremely high, but since the other blood work has all come back normal the rheumatologist doesn't want to do anything. I need Ideas or suggestions. I'm only 24. Thank god my husband is very understanding and helpful, he has had to carry me into bed sometimes because I can't walk. I need some ideas. Please!!

  • Answer:

I experience similar symptoms and was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Water walking has helped me. I also engage in visual imagery that is directed at relieving pain. Try to keep moving so that it does not incapacitate you. I am sorry that you must go through it. Maybe your rheumatologist needs to see you cry. Maybe he will help more

I am sorry to know that you suffer from those incurable illness;spina bifida alone if not the milder one you will suffer alot pulse you have also rheumatoid arthritis(possible) and you already see by specialist nothing here can offer you.Only I can suggest you find the best provider in your location such as university hospital in your area.

Have you been re-evaluated for tethered cord? It sure sounds like tethered cord symptoms. Not the swelling, but the pain. The swelling could be from possible reduced movement due to pain. I would demand your doctor refer you to a neuro-surgeon and have a full MRI done to determine what's going on.

No exercise, poor blood circulation, and poor diet. Lack of H20 and too much sugar also, I'll bet. Start with drinking LOTS of water, it's easy to do and in a week or so you'll notice a difference. Good Luck!
