Weird muscle twitching?

What can cause Muscle Twitching?

  • Hi there, I'm Jason and i'm 15 years old, I have experienced muscle twitching all over my body since the age of 10, over the 5 years the muscle twitching has gone to really extreme to not noticable at all. I think the muscle twitching has been at it's worst over the past week and i wonder if anyone has any solutions. I play video games to take my mind of it, which sometimes helps. I go to the gym, play basketball and go swimming. I have contacted my GP but even he is clueless to what can cause my muscle twitching, i have tried including extra salt in my diet, eating more fruit and exercising more but nothing seems to help get rid of it. I would like to join the forces when i leave school, but i fear my muscle twitching will be a problem. Hope somebody can help me. :)

Have you considered it may be a physiological issue as opposed a medical one, do you twitch more when your nervous ? It may be a mild form of tourretes.

If it's not something in your diet, maybe you don't get enough sleep? I have a similar problem (though not as much as you, it seems....) and I find that I get 'twitchy' when I haven't slept well, or I am stressed over something.

There are a variety of possible causes that other people have brought up, including involuntary tics that are psychological. There's no way of knowing what is causing your problem without a few diagnostic tests. A blood test would determine if you have an electrolyte imbalance. Muscle and neurological testing would detect other types of problems. Negative finding for all of these tests would suggest a psychological problem. Pay attention to when the twitches occur, and what things might be triggering them. There are a limited number of things that you can try to stop the twitches: remain fully hydrated; perform daily stretches on the muscle groups that are causing problems, and take a mineral supplement that includes magnesium, potassium and calcium (and not sodium).

Speak to your parents about electromyography. One of them can discuss this with your doctor. Now I have no idea what tests have already been done but if this wasn't one of them, I'd wonder why your GP hasn't been a little more aggressive about finding the cause.

Muscle twitching is caused by electrical impulses that are firing for no reason. There could an underlying neurological condition that's causing it. (Parkinson's disease has similar symptoms) It could also be caused from overexertion. Weight training, running, etc.

You might be lacking potassium, trying eating bananas and drinking orange juice once a day they are full of potassium.

It could be caused by drinking tea/coffee/cola at any amount. i had this problem a couple of weeks back i started drinking 2 coffee's a day, that was the cause for me.
