Can a person have both hypo and hyper thyroidism?
-
I have been diagnosed with Hasimotos, which until my thyroid dies, I won't be put on any medication. But in doing my own research I seem to have symptoms of both hyper and hypo thyroidism. I have a slight goiter (hyper), I am so intolerant to heat (hyper), I have thick, coarse hair (hypo), I had an ugly ugly menstrual cycle (hypo), slow, slow metabolism (hypo), and I have an incredible family history of thyroid disorders. I am in my 50's, and I would like to see a physician out there who works with this and will LISTEN, and will help me find things to do or take that work. Without sounding like I'm whining, I would just like to feel better for the next 50 years. Thanks.

Answer:
Most Hashimoto patients suffer from hypothyroidism. But, yes, it's possible you can have both. Check this out, if you haven't already. In many cases, Hashimoto's thyroiditis usually results in hypothyroidism, although in its acute phase, it can cause a transient hyperthyroidism thyrotoxic state known as hashitoxicosis. Physiologically, antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and/or thyroglobulin cause gradual destruction of follicles in the thyroid gland. Accordingly, the disease can be detected clinically by looking for these antibodies in the blood. It is also characterised by invasion of the thyroid tissue by leukocytes, mainly T-lymphocytes. It is associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Symptoms of Hashimoto's thyroiditis include symptoms of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and a goiter. Weight gain, weight loss, depression, mania, fatigue, panic attacks, low pulse, fast pulse, high cholesterol, reactive hypoglycemia, constipation, migraines, memory loss, infertility and hair loss are a few possible symptoms. Usually, there are no symptoms until later on. If symptoms are present, they are usually hypo- symptoms. Your TSH may be off- is it low? Your body may be over/undercompensating for damage, so you may have had this longer for than the doctor thinks. Have the doctor check both T4, T3, and TSH levels.

The natural progression of Hashimoto's In the beginning: Hyperthyroid. Your immune system is attacking your thyroid for some reason. The attack causes destruction and release of thyroid hormone stores in the thyroid gland. Elevated circulating levels of thyroid hormone in the blood cause hyperthyroidism. In the middle: The attack on your thyroid starts to burn out and thyroid hormone levels in the blood begin to fall. down the road: The thyroid gland is permanently burnt out from the attack and does not produce thyroid hormone sufficiently. Hypothyroidism sets in, requiring the use of oral thyroid hormone medication. BTW, goiter is not associated with hyperthyroidism alone. It can be seen in patients who are hypothyroid or euthyroid(normal thyroid hormone levels). Goiter is merely a descriptive term for an enlarged thyroid gland.
