Small amount of blood in stool: should I see my family doctor?
-
I'm a 20 year old female. I first want to say that there in no blood in the actual stool. The first time it happened there was a blob of blood in the toilet separated from the stool and the second time it happened it only showed up on the toilet paper when I wiped. My Dad got colon cancer when he was 42 so I'm kind of worried. I don't think I have a hemorrhoid (my mom used to get them and I don't have the symptoms). Sometimes when I'm sitting down I feel pressure on my butt area. And occasionally I have been cramping. Also, my stool is a normal color and normal consistency. I did not eat anything that caused this. The first time I saw blood was 2 weeks ago and then again this morning. What do you think?

Answer:
Yes go to your doctor as a precaution. You're still young so it's unlikely to be cancer but I can understand why you would feel concerned. Make the appt with your doctor ASAP. If it does turn out to be serious at least you will have caught it early. Good luck and I hope it's nothing serious.

Bright red - eat more greens and fiber and don't uhh push so hard, only worry about it if it continues. Dark red or reddy brown (like congealed blood) - then see a doc. The darkness determines how far away from the exit it occurred.. the further away the more serious it is.

When ever your unsure and in view that your Dad suffered colon cancer you should see your doctor. I am not a medical professional, and even one who was, are not allowed to diagnosis without seeing that patient and that patient being on their books. One can suggest things, but never take true heed of what anyone says including me. See your doctor always. It probably is quite harmless, but in view of what happened to your Dad, it is always never wasting a doctors time to go and see him. The one bit of good advise I would give you or anyone else, when they are fearing certain cancers because of family, would be to read up on the subject finding out the best foods to eat, the best things to do to avoid the same happening to you. Sometimes diseases are hereditary mostly they are not, so to give yourself peace of mind visit your doctor. Good Luck I am sure you will be fine. Billie UK

I had a similar worry. It turns out I just had hemorrhoids, but anyway. If it's just a small amount that is not in the stool, and just on the toilet paper, I would guess it is probably just more of an exterior issue, if not hemorrhoids, maybe just a small anal cut or fissure or something. However, if you are experiencing other symptoms and you have decent health insurance, there's no harm in going to the doctor. You would at the very least have peace of mind. Here's another great idea. If you can get over the embarrassment, talk to your parents about it. Your mom has had hemorrhoids and your dad has had colon cancer. Discuss your symptoms with them and see if it resembles what either of them felt. That would be a great resource.
