How long does it take for a kidney stone to pass?

  • I passed one kidney stone already last Wednesday and I have another one and the pain is exhausting!!! I am going to a urologist tomorrow morning. They said it is a size 4mm. It is costing me time off of work. It is really starting to disrupt my life. I do have pain medicine from the emergency room. I just keep taking off of work. Any advice on this subject.

Hi sassy-cat - good question, and the answer depends on several factors: the size of the stone (which you know), the composition, whether the stone is lodged in the urinary tract; if the stone is in the kidney tissue itself, it can't pass naturally. Stones as small as 1/16th of an inch have taken more than 24 hours to pass. BUT I had a kidney stone that was slightly larger than yours, with a jagged edge, yet I passed it. When the paramedics were driving me to the hospital, one said "...sorry, I know kidney stones can be more painful than childbirth" , but I got through it with no further recurrences. The ones that don't pass get zapped with a laser to break up the stone. I feel for you, and I want you to know you'll be healing soon. God bless you. (last year nursing student)

Hi there... I do not what you are going through personally, but my husband has recurring kidney stones, and unfortunatly a year ago one required surgery, it was blocking his urethra. He got some relief, strangely enough when he would soak in a warm bath. But like yourself he was out of work for quite some time, before the surgery even happened. I have attached a link to give dietary suggestions for helping to try and keep them from getting larger. They say it is more common in summer, since most people don't hydrate sufficently. So biggest tip...drink tons of water. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor any question you may have, and if you don't like his/ her answers, get another opinion from a new doc. Ask the doc for the special straining cup to catch your stones so they can be looked at by them. Good luck and I hope this helps. Hopefully you can pass your stone on your own and it doesn't require surgery (hope it happens in a few days and not more like a month!) :-)

Depends where in your ureter the stone is sitting. Obviously, the higher up it is, the longer it takes. According to the Amercian Urological Society, stones 2- 4mm in size pass on average within 7 - 14.5 days, stones larger than 4mm pass anywhere from 5.5 - 53 days. Stones that are less than 5mm and sitting in the lower 1/3 of the ureter will pass eventually in 98% of cases. There have been small sized studies looking at the use of various medicines (not just pain killers) to improve the rate and speed of stone passage (such as steroids, alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers). They look promising, but as I said, there is still a lack of convincingly and methodologically rigorous large scale randomised trials to fully validate and advocate the use of such medicines, but you might want to talk to your urologist about it to see if he/she would consider.

Find out what is in your kidney stones, and go on that diet to avoid the build up of that substance. Stay well hydrated, as that will help flush them out.

Depending on the treatment process and the diet you are doing. But, drinking a lot of liquids will defenitely help. Avoid salty foods and drinks.

A stone may pass between 1 to 4 weeks once symptoms appeared. Drink 2 glasses of water every 2 hours while you are awake. If you have kidney, heart, or liver disease and are on fluid restrictions, talk with your doctor before drinking more fluids. Use ibuprofen (such as Motrin and Advil), for pain.
