How can I deal with some hornets?

Swarmed by hornets - onset of tetanus?

  • Okay, six days ago I was minding my own business, walking outside my apartment, when all of a sudden I felt a sting on the back of my head. Suddenly I was being swarmed by insects and received approximately a dozen stings to the scalp, neck, and ears. After getting away, I took the basic precautions of ice, a shower, and Benadryl (there were no stingers in the wounds so I assume they were hornets or yellowjackets). Five days later I noticed that the muscles on my right thigh were spasming mildly and they have continued to do so today. The spasms are quite mild but they are present and relatively continuous. I would have immediately gone to the doctor to get a tetanus shot as recommended by WebMd but, to put it bluntly, I'm broke and I figured the odds of anything serious were low in comparison to the cost of treatment (I'm still paying off the $1,600 bill those predators handed me last year in exchange for a report of high blood pressure). A friend of mine in the medical field suggested I get a tetanus shot at a "CVS minute clinic" that would only cost about $70. What I want to know is, do these mild muscle spasms sound like an early onset of tetanus or would the disease be more violent? For the record, no, I have not received a tetanus vaccination in many years. The icing on the cake is that, after a very long period of unemployment, I finally found a job and my first day of work is tomorrow, so I can't be frivolous and miss work unless this is all as serious as it may be. I'm aware that muscle spasms can be stress-related...so, what should I do? What symptoms (or exaggeration of present symptoms) should I look for, and how soon would they typically develop? If the disease has already manifested will a vaccination even help? Thank you for your time.
