What are some birth control options other than the pill?

Birth control pill, DVT, other options?

  • I've been on the birth control pull Levlen/levora for about 6 years. I've been noticing that I get alot of leg cramps when I try to exercise! I can't even do squats without my muscles tightening & cramping. I say it's my birth control because I eat right & drink plenty of water. anywho, I recently discovered a new vein on my right calf and my right inner thigh. I feel this leg to be my weaker leg & my muscles spasm alot. I told my doctor about it & he said I'm too young (im 22) to be having blood clots but I'm at risk because of my pills! I want to PREVENT a full blow DVT because i know i probably dont have it but i know if i dont get off the pill, ill get it. What do I do?! Do I ask for an ultrasound of my leg? I know it's the esteogen in my BC pills that would cause a possible DVT but I don't want to stop taking a form of birth control. I'm not fond of condoms, sponges, etc. ahhh! Help!? :(

  • Answer:

First of all, relax. Millions of women take OC and do not develop a DVT. Second, you have to understand the symptoms of DVT. If you really have a DVT (in your leg for example) your leg will get red, hot, and will hurt when you touch it. Your MD is right, you don't have any risk factors. They include other diseases (high BP, diabetes, high cholesterol), being older than 35, and SMOKING! Eat right, exercise, drink plenty of fluids, and don't smoke. You'll be fine.
