What is considered a low level of TSH?

Hypothyroidism...can someone tell me whatsup with my TSH level!?!?

  • im 20, male, and have hypothyroidism (which is very rare considering my age and sex). Primary Doctor tests: My first blood test (test was not looking for hypo but my cholesterol...tsh was just found to be abnormal this time) had a----------------- TSH of 5.8------------------------- about 4 months later I got retested to verify no mistakes were made...--------------TSH was 6.8-------------- ENDOCRINOLOGIST TESTS: about a month after above test i went to an endo...---------------TSH was 9.8------------------ I went to get a 2nd opinion from another doctor...--------------TSH dropped down to 2.0ish------------- Blood tested again (quest diagnostics- im in college and couldnt get a ride home) Blood work results came in,----------------- TSH at 5.2-------------- NOTE: Hashimotos was NEGATIVE for all blood work. Can someone explain how my TSH could vary so drastically over the course of about a year? wtfs going on? i was about to go on meds after the 9.8 but then after the 2nd opinion..sheitttt...hahah idk what to do and the doc's seem confused also so im gonna get tested AGAIN at quest diagnostics in a few more weeks...not sure what to expect. Thoughts?

  • Answer:

Those ups & downs DO indicate Hashimoto's. BTW, this is not rare but common. You need a new doctor. You need testing for thyroid ANTIBODIES as well as TSH. TSH ‘norm’ should be .3 – 3 (w/ most feeling best at < 2) but, for diagnosis, may not mean much if ANTIBODIES are present which is indicative of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroiditis (cycles between HYPER & HYPO at start)…it is the main cause of eventual HypOthyroidism but worse (...OR Graves Disease – HypERthyroid from beginning). WARNING: Doctors seem not to want to find/treat thyroid disease. You may have to go to more than one doctor before you get the right tests, interpretation, and treatment. Best wishes.
